Carol Bartley was a superb all-around gymnast. She was a 4-year varsity letter winner and as a senior placed 5th on the vault individual in State competition. She was a District qualifier all four years at CFHS. During her senior year, she was First Team All-Conference in gymnastics and volleyball. At Ohio State University, Carol earned four more letters in gymnastics. At the Nationals in 1982, she placed 8th on floor exercise. Her college teammates and coaches voted her the Most Dedicated Award that same year.
T.J. FLORKIEWICZ
T.J. was named All-Ohio in three sports at CFHS. He was First Team All-State as a kicker in football and Honorable Mention for two years in basketball and baseball. After playing football for a year at Penn State, he transferred to Allegheny College where he earned All-League honors in basketball and football. As a punter, he was invited to tryouts for the Cleveland Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Buffalo Bills. T.J. currently teaches and coaches at Euclid City Schools.
COLLEEN J. THOME-KENNEDY
Colleen took her swimming prowess to great lengths during high school and college. At CFHS, she was a 4-time state qualifier and member of relay teams which placed in the top three at the state meet. At the University of Iowa, she set school records in the 50 yard freestyle and the 200 yard free relay. She was All Big Ten Conference during her junior and senior years and qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 50 yard freestyle. Colleen was also a fine track and field athlete at Cd
DAVID MARK REVELLE
Dave earned a place as one of the best track athletes in CFHS history. His 400 meter school record of 48.1, set in 1980, hasn’t been seriously challenged. He set several track records at Chagrin, placing second in the 400 meters at the state meet in Columbus during his senior year. He went on to earn NCAA All American honors in track at the University of Virginia. At Virginia, he set a school record in the 400 meter hurdles and was inducted into the University of Virginia Hall of Fame. Dave also ran cross country and played soccer at Chagrin.
JANET WARD CURLEY
Janet excelled in three sports at CFHS – volleyball, basketball and track and field. In basketball, she played on the 1983 State Runner-Up team, earning many individual honors. During her senior year, she was selected Second Team AP All-Ohio and Third Team UPI All-Ohio in basketball. In track and field, she graduated as Chagrin’s career point leader. She also held school records in the 400 meters and 1600 meter relay, events in which she competed at the State Track Meet in 1983. As a volleyball player, Janet was a Second Team Chagrin Valley Conference selection in 1984.
BRETT M. RUDOLPH
Brett Rudolph was one of the most powerful runners to ever wear a Tiger football uniform. It didn’t hurt that he was also the fastest runner in the league. As a senior, he rushed for more than 1300 yards and scored 21 touchdowns, earning him the Most Valuable Player Award for the Chagrin Valley Conference and also Geauga County, He was an All-Ohio selection and recipient of the Cleveland Touchdown Club Award. Brett was a 4-year letterman in track and field. In 1983, he was the Chagrin Valley Conference’s 100 meter dash champion. He qualified for the State Track Meet in the 100 meters and 400 relay. At the University of North Carolina, he played linebacker, lettering all four years. In 1987, Brett was chosen First Team All Atlantic Conference and Honorable Mention All American.
ROBERT B. OHLRICH
Early in his teaching career at Chagrin Falls High, Bob was a boys basketball coach, but it was with girls basketball that his name became synonymous. Starting the girls basketball program in 1975, this math teacher’s coaching numbers speak for themselves: 304 wins, 73 losses, a State Runner-Up, 3 State Semi finals, 6 District Champs, 12 Sectional Champs, and 9 Chagrin Valley Conference Championships. Twice he was named Associated Press Northeast District Coach of the Year. Seven times, he was selected Coach of the Year in the Chagrin Valley Conference. In 1991, Bob retired from coaching girls basketball. He had also coached golf and baseball at CFHS.
NANCY E. FITZ
Nancy learned how to win early in her athletic career at Chagrin Falls High School. As a freshman, she participated in three state championships in Columbus — cross country, basketball and track. Her basketball teams compiled a four-year varsity record of 94-12, including two state appearances. She is the only Chagrin basketball player to take part in the state’s “sweet sixteen” for all four years. During her senior year, she was selected second team All Ohio and named Most Valuable player in the Chagrin Valley Conference. Nancy’s winning ways didn’t stop with her graduation from CFHS. Captain and four-year letter winner on the basketball team at Dartmouth College, her teams registered a 72-31 record, including four Ivy league championships.
ANDREW WIESE
1983 Considered by most to be Chagrin’s premier middle distance runner, Andy became a 4-year letter winner in track at the University of Iowa. In 1984, he placed third in the 800 meters at the Big Ten Championships. While at Chagrin Falls High, he won back-to-back state championships in the 1600 meters. His winning time of 4:13 during his senior year set a new AA state record. For his accomplishments in track, Andy was a 1983 honorable mention All American selection. He was the 1983 Midwest Champion in the 1600 meters and winner of CFHS’s Vern Lockemer Award, 1981-83. Also a fine cross country runner and soccer player, Andy finished his track career at CFHS as its all-time leading scorer.
JANE PHEND
While she was an outstanding athlete in volleyball and track, it’s the basketball wizardry of Jane Phend that few will forget. She dominates the CFHS record books as she once did her opponents. Among her career records are total points, assists, and steals. She scored 43 points in a single game and 39 points in a state tournament game, also school records. During the 1983 season, when the Lady Tigers were State Runners-up, Jane averaged 24.9 points a game and 27.0 in tournament play. As a senior, she was UPI First Team All-State and Player of the Year AA. She was also AP First Team All-State. Jane played in the McDonald’s All Star Classic and was invited to try out the for Pan American Games in 1983. She went on to star in basketball at the University of Cincinnati, where she was a 4-year letter winner. In 1987, she won the Helen Norman Smith Award for her college’s Most Outstanding Senior Female Athlete. Also during her senior year, she was First Team All Metro Conference.
GLENN WYVILLE
Esteemed by his peers for his masterful game preparation, Glenn guided Tiger teams to 352 victories during his long reign (1960-1988) as Head Basketball Coach. His victory total ranks as one of the highest in the history of boys’ basketball in Ohio. Glenn’s teams won three district titles, eight sectional crowns, and seven conference titles. Three of his teams were in regional competition. He was selected Conference Coach of the Year seven times, and in 1987 he received the Greater Cleveland Coach of the Year Award. As head baseball Coach, his teams won two conference championships. He served as Athletic Director at CFHS from 1983 through 1991. Glenn was the Director of the Chagrin Valley Recreation Center from 1964 through 1988.
JOHN PIAI
If a coach’s record speaks for itself, then another word need not be spoken for John Piai. John’s Tiger football teams were the toasts of this town for so many seasons that the electricity they generated still burns brightly in our collective memory. The number “29” flashes before us. John was Head Football Coach at CFHS for 29 seasons (1962-1990). He was an assistant coach for the first season and Head Coach for the next three of a 29-game undefeated streak from 1961 through the first game of the 1964 season. Then, there was the 29-game win streak from 1970 through 1973. All told his teams won 175 games. Included were eight conference championships and four undefeated seasons. He was Conference Coach of the Year eight times, and in 1972 he was selected the Greater Cleveland Coach of the Year. In 1987, his team reached the Division IV State Playoffs, and John received the Lee Tressel Award from the Cleveland Touchdown Club. An all-around athlete at Thiel College, he was elected to that college’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.
SUSAN ELIZABETH WISE
Soon after she was graduated from CFHS, Sue’s basketball jersey number “42” was permanently retired in honor of her many accomplishments. While her leadership and athletic abilities enhanced the play of Tiger teams in tennis and track, it was on the basketball court where her star shined most brightly. Sue was an All-Ohio basketball selection in 1978-79 and 1979-80 with the 1978-79 team reaching the state semi-finals. She was the Chagrin Valley Conference’s Most Valuable Player in 1978-79. In the 40 basketball games she played on the CFHS floor, 40 victories were recorded. Sue was captain of the basketball team at William & Mary College. In 1989-90, she coached Hope College to a National Division III Championship in women’s basketball. She was named National Division III Basketball Coach of the Year.
