Dr. Bruce Campbell has been a career diplomat for the United Nations with a focus on reducing poverty and addressing humanitarian suffering. His efforts began when he worked with Salvadoran refugees in Honduras. Bruce met his wife at Harvard when he was getting his second master’s degree, their union transcends past the typical marriage, as they frequently travel on humanitarian missions together. They would work together in Honduras, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Netherlands, Ghana, Nepal, Eritrea, Zimbabwe and Vietnam. During the time of Israeli occupation in southern Lebanon, Bruce was director of a 40 bed hospital for Palestinian refugees. He was most likely the last remaining U.S. male in Lebanon at the time and was briefly taken hostage by a militia group. His next post was directing a medical program for Afghan refugees, which provided clinical services to 1,100 patients a day. During that time, his wife Ellen directed a Health Education Resource Center for which provided services to three million Afghan refugees living in Pakistan. Bruce also worked for the Royal Tropical Institute of the Netherlands as a technical advisor and consultant. He would go on to be Chief Technical Advisor for the Ministry of Health in Ghana for 4 years and in Nepal for 7 years. During that time, both countries witnessed significant reductions in Maternal and Child Mortality. Between 1984 and 2014, he led or participated in over 120 technical missions to more than 25 developing countries. One of his proudest achievements oversaw a program during the time of the sharpest decline in HIV prevalence in the history of the epidemic in Zimbabwe. After 30 years abroad, living in nine countries, Bruce is now in New York City as Director of United Nations Population Fund – Technical Division, where he leads a team of 90+ professionals who provide policy and technical advice to 6 regional and 129 country offices.
Charlie Hartsock
Charlie has had an outstanding career in film, television and commercials on both sides of the camera. His career started in Chicago where he was a member of The Second City. While there, Charlie also held the titles of Creative Director and Head Writer. He then went on to commercials and television. Three of his commercials have won top prizes at the Cannes International Advertising Festival, while he also had recurring roles on Spin City, Arrested Development, and According to Jim. Currently, Charlie develops and produces motion pictures for, and with, his partner at Carousel Production, Steve Carell. He has been Executive Producer of Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013), and Showtime’s Inside Comedy series. Charlie was also the founding member of Burpee’s Seedy Theatrical Company, the nation’s longest active college improvisation group.
Robert Belanger
Bob has had an honorable career serving our country and the state of Florida as an attorney and judge. He began his legal career when he was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. He served as an Unrestricted Line Officer assigned to Judge Advocate billet representing servicemen in a variety of roles. Bob continued his legal career in Cleveland and then took his talents Martin County, Florida where he held the position of Assistant State Attorney. In 2004, Governor Jeb Bush appointed him Circuit Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit. Bob handles such matters as, major criminal offenses, domestic relations, probate issues, civil cases involving amounts greater than $15,000, and appeals from county courts. Several of his decisions have been published and he has been awarded the Martindale-Hubbell AV rating. Bob has been President of the Justice Major B. Harding American Inn of Court
John Miller
John Miller is an internationally renowned artist on three continents. John has been recognized with numerous awards including The Wolfgang Hahn Prize, Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst, Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2011); Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant (2001); Third Place, Best Gallery Show, Association of International Art Critics, U.S. Chapter (1996); and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award (1989). John started doing his mature work between graduate and undergraduate school, some of which were videos that were shown at the Anthology Film Archives in 1977. He then branched out into several mediums. John has also earned several fellowships and grants in the U.S., Berlin and Japan. As a Professor of Professional Practice at Barnard College, he teaches art and art criticism. John also serves on the board of Primary Information, a non-profit arts publisher and regularly donates artwork to benefit arts organization and for AIDS research.
RICK BOLANDER
Rick has been a successful venture capitalist in the areas of communications, applications and Internet/ mobile services. He is the Managing Director and co-founder of Gabriel Venture Partners. Over his career he has been involved in more than 50 venture investments and led over $100M in early-stage financings. While at AT&T, Rick received the President’s Award and the Quality Management of the Year Award. He also taught computer architecture at his alma mater, the University of Michigan. Currently Rick serves on several Board of Directors, coaches his children’s teams in various sports and has been a frequent contributor to at-risk children and educational charities.
LORI BARES NORTHRUP
Lori founded and built Stride Tool into a global company with hundreds of employees and multi-millions in sales. She and her husband Bill have started more than 20 businesses. Outside of her corporate role, Lori sits on several boards including many non-profit organizations. She is an active public speaker and has focused her attention to mentoring women in the business world. Lori spends much of her spare time in Western New York on her passion for horses.
WENDY MURRAY
Wendy is an award winning author and contributing magazine writer. Since earning a master’s degree in theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, she has written numerous books on religious topics, including “The Beliefnet Guide to Evangelical Christianity” and “A Mended and Broken Heart: The Life and Love of St. Francis of Assisi.” She is a former regional reporter in Honduras for Time magazine, and was a senior writer for “Christianity Today.” Wendy has also been an adjunct professor at Gordon College.
KIRK SPRESSER
Kirk has always had a knack at being a manager. In his days at CFHS, he ran the summer tennis program at the Rec Center. His managerial skills blossomed as well as his responsibilities. He has been in the role of President of Red Lobster; President & COO of Lifetouch, Inc., which includes 450 portrait studios; Senior Managing Partner of The Zyman Group; and Co-founder & Partner of McHugh Consulting. His expertise and leadership have also been greatly valued on the many community boards Kirk has served on over the years.
HELEN K. WU M.D.
Dr. Wu is the Director of Refractive Surgery at the New England Eye Center and an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University. Dr. Wu completed her undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Michigan and her medical degree at The Ohio State University, College of Medicine. Her ophthalmology residency was performed at the Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor, MI. Helen completed her dual fellowship training in ocular immunology and uveitis and in cornea refractive surgery, both at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. She plays a leadership role in major worldwide ophthalmology organizations, including important committee memberships in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Helen has published numerous scientific papers related to refractive surgery and edited the textbook Refractive Surgery. Dr. Wu has served as a key investigator in numerous FDA clinical trials where new LASIK technologies are developed and perfected. Dr. Wu was named among the Best Doctors in America: February 2006 “Top Doctor” issue of Boston Magazine. She is married to Dr. Jussi Saukkonen, a pulmonologist. They have two children; Julia, age 9, and Daniel, age 6. Helen and her husband enjoy ballroom dancing, traveling, skiing, hiking, swimming and skating.
DOUGLAS C. BAKER
Doug Baker’s career in the performing arts began in his senior year when he was director of the Orange and Black Review. Early in his chosen vocation he was manager of numerous Broadway productions in New York City. Presently, Doug is in his 14th season as general manager of Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles. It is one of the largest and most active theatre companies in the nation. CTG stages programming year round at the 750-seat Mark Taper Forum and the 2000-seat Ahmanson Theatre at the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County. Attendance exceeds 800,000 people a year. He is on the Board of Governors of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers and has been a guest lecturer at the Yale School of Drama and California State University. Doug was a founding trustee of Musical Theatre Works, a non-profit theatre based in New York City. He has worked closely with such stars as Carol Channing, Mary Martin, Yule Brynner, Mickey Rooney, Ed Asner, Carol Burnett and many others.
TINA SHAFER
Beginning with performances on the stage of the Chagrin Falls Schools’ auditorium on Philomethian Street, Tina Shafer has become a successful singer/songwriter. She has written songs for some of pop music’s biggest stars, including Celine Dion, Bette Midler, Donna Summer, Sheena Easton, Phoebe Snow and many others. Her song “Love Is On The Way” was the featured ballad in the film “The First Wives Club.” Her debut CD “Backyard Sky” was dedicated to Chagrin Falls and her own backyard where she said, “so many dreams took seed.” Tina has a publishing contract with Artemis Music, a division of Warner Chappell. A great believer in bringing the work of songwriters to the public, Tina has been coordinator of The New York Songwriters Circle for the past 12 years. It has served the songwriting community as a stepping-stone to record labels and publishing companies. She is also a teacher and worked with major record label artists such as Vanessa Carlton and Avril Lavigne.
STEFFANIE PEARCE VASQUEZ
Soprano Steffanie Pearce has enjoyed a distinguished career throughout Europe and the United States as a singing actress. She has won The Pavarotti Competition, Montreal International, D’Angelo and the American Traditions competition among others. On the opera stage she is most noted for distinctive portrayals of tragic heroines including: Violetta, Leonora, Marguerite, Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, The Countess in Figaro and Tosca. She has performed with many opera companies including: Opera de Marseille, The Bulgarian State Opera, Opera Lisboa, The Opera Co. of Philadelphia, San Diego Opera, The Buxton Festival in England and many European and U.S. tours with Teatro Lyrico d Europe. Equally at home on the concert stage, she has performed with The Montreal Symphony and The Lexington Philharmonic. Steffanie has appeared as a soloist at many famous theaters including; Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center. She enjoys performing solo recitals and teaching voice.
MELISSA HURST
It would seem that Melissa has been active in the theater and the arts all her life. During her high school years at Chagrin her burgeoning talent was recognized and rewarded by a scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan where she studied drama and graduated with honors in 1973. She attended Southern Methodist University and then transferred to New York University where she graduated with a BFA in 1978. Melissa has played featured roles on television’s Law and Order, and Guiding Light, and recently played Dr. Cambrini in the film Love in 3. She has performed in numerous award-winning New York and regional productions. In the past year, Melissa has appeared in stage productions of William Inge’s Picnic, Herb Gardner’s I’m Not a Rappaport, and Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones. In New York City Melissa is a member of the Playwright’s Gallery Acting Company, and is a regular performer in the cult-hit show, Cause Celeb. She most recently has written and performed a one-woman show entitled Baby Love that has received excellent reviews. In service to her community Melissa has performed extensively with Performance Plus and Plays for Living, two New York based organizations that present socially relevant dramas to schools, hospitals, and businesses. Topics of these dramas have included: domestic violence, sexual harassment, and diversity in the workplace. Melissa is married to actor Richard Council and they live in New York City and Vermont with their son Will.
RICHARD A. D’ARDENNE
Following his graduation from Purdue in 1980, with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Richard took a job with Phillips 66 Company in Pasadena, Texas. His 26-year career with Phillips, now ConocoPhillips has taken him around the world and placed him in charge of several billion-dollar projects. As a vice president he is currently heading the future capital projects program in Australia and the Timor. The venture centers on liquefied natural gas, which is an alternative to using gas pipelines and has been a new focus for the energy giant ConocoPhillips. From 1999-2004 he was the project and construction manager for a $1.3 billion dollar contract executed in Venezuela that employed a labor workforce of over 7000 people. While in Venezuela, he served as president of the school board at an international school in Puerto La Cruz. Despite his travels, Richard has remained active, including holding the positions of deacon at his church and president of his community association in Houston. While in Chagrin, he lettered in cross-country and track, and was awarded the Bausch & Lomb Science Award. Richard fondly remembers Skip Riegel his scoutmaster and former Sands Elementary principal. Under Mr. Riegel’s leadership he went on to earn his Eagle Scout rank and then work as a scout camp counselor for five summers in high school and college. Richard also enjoyed the time he spent in four years of high school musicals working under Harold Loesch and Molly Macknin. He credits the Chagrin Falls School System and Purdue University for providing him with a solid educational foundation. Richard relies upon his faith to persevere through the difficult times. He is grateful to his wife Paula of 23 years and their three great kids; Ben, Sarah and Jordan for their support. In his free time Richard enjoys golf, although not a golfer, travel, hunting, fishing and reading.
BRIAN MCDERMOTT
With nine siblings, Brian learned early how to get along with others, which also garnered him the title of “Most Friendly” by his Class of 1972 classmates. Nowadays Brian and his wife, Charlene, have enjoyed running multiple restaurants in Indiana, but he has found greater joy as a missionary with over 30 trips to Haiti. His tireless efforts have saved lives through annual medical aid trips that have treated over 6,000, educated thousands of children, brought in over 400 water purification units, built a church and improved the daily lives of many villages in Haiti.
