Dr. Thomas Martinko had a lengthy and decorated military career, which has been followed by heading two separate pediatric units at prestigious universities. Tom earned the rank of Colonel of the Medical Corps of the US Army and was deployed overseas on several occasions including stays in Honduras, Germany, and Afghanistan. During his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, Joint Services Commendation Medal, the Order of Military Medical Merit, the Combat Patch, the Afghanistan Service Ribbon, the Government War on Terrorism Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Ribbon. Tom has been published and made several presentations on adolescent and sports medicine, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and smoking cessation. He is a member of many medical organizations, including being a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics. Currently, Tom is a Associate Professor and Director of Adolescent Medicine in the Division of General Pediatrics at the University of Florida, which are positions he previously held at the University of South Alabama. Additionally, He has devoted many hours to youth programs, and is an Eucharistic minister. Recently, Tom was keynote speaker of the 2014 Chagrin Falls Memorial Day Program.
Dr. James Thobaben
Dr. James Thobaben is a professor and Dean of the School of Theology and Formation at Asbury Theological Seminary, one of the largest such institutions in the U.S. In addition, he currently oversees Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment, managing the decanal accreditation process for the institution. His academic fields are bioethics, social ethics, and sociology of religion. His special research interests include disability issues (especially traumatic brain injury related), social benefit from and concern with genetically-modified non-human organisms, the spiritual and cultural meaning of pilgrimage, ecclesial architecture, and rural life. As well as working full-time at Asbury, he serves as the pastor of a small, rural church, is a part-time professor in the University of Kentucky, College of Public Health, an adjunct professor at Trinity International University, and operates a small tree farm. Dr. Thobaben was Visiting Ethics Scholar in Molecular Biology at the University of Missouri. He is the recipient of several teaching grants for instruction on American rural life. His work, Healthcare Ethics: A Comprehensive Christian Resource, is used as a primary bioethics text in several graduate programs across the U.S. For both academic and spiritual reasons, Dr. Thobaben has twice walked the Camino de Santiago de Compostela and several of the long pilgrimage routes in Great Britain. Prior to assuming his current position, he was vice-president of a physical rehabilitation facility centered on the treatment of those with traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. His academic degrees are from Oberlin, Yale, and Emory.
KIRK SPRESSER
Kirk has always had a knack at being a manager. In his days at CFHS, he ran the summer tennis program at the Rec Center. His managerial skills blossomed as well as his responsibilities. He has been in the role of President of Red Lobster; President & COO of Lifetouch, Inc., which includes 450 portrait studios; Senior Managing Partner of The Zyman Group; and Co-founder & Partner of McHugh Consulting. His expertise and leadership have also been greatly valued on the many community boards Kirk has served on over the years.
WENDY MURRAY
Wendy is an award winning author and contributing magazine writer. Since earning a master’s degree in theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, she has written numerous books on religious topics, including “The Beliefnet Guide to Evangelical Christianity” and “A Mended and Broken Heart: The Life and Love of St. Francis of Assisi.” She is a former regional reporter in Honduras for Time magazine, and was a senior writer for “Christianity Today.” Wendy has also been an adjunct professor at Gordon College.
LORI BARES NORTHRUP
Lori founded and built Stride Tool into a global company with hundreds of employees and multi-millions in sales. She and her husband Bill have started more than 20 businesses. Outside of her corporate role, Lori sits on several boards including many non-profit organizations. She is an active public speaker and has focused her attention to mentoring women in the business world. Lori spends much of her spare time in Western New York on her passion for horses.
TIM CLEGG
Tim has been an entrepreneur for over twenty years in the marketing industry. His Clegg Industries, based in California, has been a leader in electronic promotional products, while his recently started company Americhip Inc. has taken marketing to a new multisensory level. Outside of work, Tim has kept busy overseeing a mentoring program and lecturing at Loyola Marymount College. His leadership and work ethic were seen early on at CFHS for he was selected MVP of the CVC in basketball. After CFHS, Tim graduated from Albion College in Michigan. Although his business ventures have gone global, Tim has been able to keep close with his family for brothers John ‘78, Kevin ‘83 and Jim ’79 also work with him.
DR. JOHN BARES
John plays a dual role as a research professor in Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute and Director of the National Robotics Engineering Consortium (NREC). John’s efforts are to enable widespread adoption of roboticized mobile equipment in industry and the military. He also has used his skills to oversee the creation and funding of the K-12 Robotics Academy at the NREC in Pittsburgh.
DR. SEAN KAY
Sean is a full professor in the Political Science Department at Ohio Wesleyan University and has been a leading expert on international affairs including the topics of NATO, the UN, the EU and Afghanistan. He has played a role as an informal foreign policy advisor to the presidential campaigns of Sen. Barack Obama in 2008 and Sen. John Edwards in 2004. Dr. Kay has spoken to numerous organizations, universities and been a visiting scholar at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Sean has also written several books and been regularly published in political science journals and newspapers.
ARLINE MILLER MOORE
Arline has spent her lifetime helping others in Chagrin Falls. After retiring as an elementary school teacher in the Chagrin Falls School District, she has continued to help in many roles with the schools. Outside of education, she has volunteered with the Friends of the Chagrin Falls Public Library, Chagrin Falls Historical Society and the Chagrin Falls Alumni Association, where she has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees.
AUDRE BLAIR
Audre has had a profound impact on the development of Geauga County. The Ohio Fairs Hall of Fame inducted him for his 65-year service as a director of The Great Geauga County Fair – longer than anyone else in Ohio and more than one-third of the 181 years that the fair has been in existence. The 2010 Fair marked the 95th year that he has attended the fair. Outside of the Fair, Audre has been a long time member and leader in the local grange, Geauga County Soil & Water Conservation Board, Geauga County Cooperative Association, Geauga County Maple Festival, Geauga County 4-H Advisory Committee, and Village of Newbury Trustee. In 1948, Audre received two awards: Geauga County Farm Family and Ohio Dairy Farmer of the Year.
RONALD MCCORMICK
Ron enjoyed a 33 year career with the Forest Service, USDA, finishing with a six year assignment as Forest Supervisor of the one million acre Siskiyou National Forest in Southwest Oregon. During his career, he was summoned to Washington, D.C. several times to testify before Congressional committees on subjects ranging from fire suppression and post-fire rehabilitation to forest planning. Ron also met periodically with the Governor of Oregon, and key Senators and Congressmen regarding natural resource management issues and conflicts. Ron has earned several awards including Outstanding Performance as Forest Supervisor, Society of American Foresters “Tough Tree Award”, and Secretary of Agriculture Superior Service Award. Following retire- ment I founded and operated a consulting forestry business for 10 years. Recently he authored and published a book entitled Plain Green Wrapper – A Forester’s Story which has enjoyed a success that has exceeded his expectations.
THOMAS MATTERN
Tom enjoyed a 31 year career as an American History teacher at Beachwood High School, Strongsville High School and for 25 years at Chagrin Falls Middle School. He has been honored in his profession by being named the 1st Chagrin Falls Schools “Teacher of the Year” and the Ohio Outstanding American History Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Tom has served on the Board of Directors for the Chagrin Valley Recreation Center, Main Street of Chagrin Falls, United Methodist Church, and Meals-On-Wheels. Several awards have been named in his honor for outstanding 8th grade history student, CFHS Athletic Department Service Award and CFAA Alumni Scholarship. Tom was named the 1996 Citisun of the Year by the Chagrin Herald Sun/West Geauga Sun. The Chagrin Valley Jaycees has honored him with the Distinguished Service Award and selecting him to be Grand Marshall of the Blossom Time Parade. In his retirement he helped to oversee the formation of Chagrin Falls Alumni Association, served as its Director for 15 years and is currently serving as Alumni Director Emeritus.
RICK BOLANDER
Rick has been a successful venture capitalist in the areas of communications, applications and Internet/ mobile services. He is the Managing Director and co-founder of Gabriel Venture Partners. Over his career he has been involved in more than 50 venture investments and led over $100M in early-stage financings. While at AT&T, Rick received the President’s Award and the Quality Management of the Year Award. He also taught computer architecture at his alma mater, the University of Michigan. Currently Rick serves on several Board of Directors, coaches his children’s teams in various sports and has been a frequent contributor to at-risk children and educational charities.
DOUGLAS C. BAKER
Doug Baker’s career in the performing arts began in his senior year when he was director of the Orange and Black Review. Early in his chosen vocation he was manager of numerous Broadway productions in New York City. Presently, Doug is in his 14th season as general manager of Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles. It is one of the largest and most active theatre companies in the nation. CTG stages programming year round at the 750-seat Mark Taper Forum and the 2000-seat Ahmanson Theatre at the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County. Attendance exceeds 800,000 people a year. He is on the Board of Governors of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers and has been a guest lecturer at the Yale School of Drama and California State University. Doug was a founding trustee of Musical Theatre Works, a non-profit theatre based in New York City. He has worked closely with such stars as Carol Channing, Mary Martin, Yule Brynner, Mickey Rooney, Ed Asner, Carol Burnett and many others.
TINA SHAFER
Beginning with performances on the stage of the Chagrin Falls Schools’ auditorium on Philomethian Street, Tina Shafer has become a successful singer/songwriter. She has written songs for some of pop music’s biggest stars, including Celine Dion, Bette Midler, Donna Summer, Sheena Easton, Phoebe Snow and many others. Her song “Love Is On The Way” was the featured ballad in the film “The First Wives Club.” Her debut CD “Backyard Sky” was dedicated to Chagrin Falls and her own backyard where she said, “so many dreams took seed.” Tina has a publishing contract with Artemis Music, a division of Warner Chappell. A great believer in bringing the work of songwriters to the public, Tina has been coordinator of The New York Songwriters Circle for the past 12 years. It has served the songwriting community as a stepping-stone to record labels and publishing companies. She is also a teacher and worked with major record label artists such as Vanessa Carlton and Avril Lavigne.
